Getting Into the Inbox: The Real Email Marketing Game

Ever sent an email and wondered if anyone even saw it? If your emails keep going to spam, they’re not doing their job. But don’t worry—there’s a way to fix this and make sure your messages get opened and read.

1. Keep Your Email List Clean

A messy email list can hurt your chances of getting into inboxes. Here’s how to keep it in good shape:

✅ Remove people who haven’t opened your emails in 3-6 months.
✅ Focus on people who actually open and click your emails.
✅ Watch for complaints—too many, and your emails will be blocked.
✅ Use a real, professional email address.

Pro Tip: Use tools like ZeroBounce or NeverBounce to clean your list and remove bad email addresses. This one is one of my favorites (Reoon).

2. Use the Right Tools

Your email service provider (ESP) plays a big role in deliverability. Here are some good options:

  • Klaviyo – Great for eCommerce brands.

  • ConvertKit – Perfect for creators and bloggers.

  • Mailgun – Best for transactional emails.

  • Infusionsoft, GetResponse, Aweber – Solid all-in-one platforms.

Also, use MXToolbox to check if your domain is blacklisted. If it is, your emails won’t get through.

3. Watch Your Spam Score

Every email has a spam score. If it’s too high, your email won’t land in the inbox. Here’s what affects it:
🔹 Email headers and authentication (set up SPF, DKIM, and DMARC).
🔹 Subject lines—avoid words like “FREE” and “ACT NOW.” too often.
🔹 Too many links—keep it simple.
🔹 Poorly formatted emails—stick to clean, professional designs.

4. Fix Problems When They Happen

Even with a good setup, you might still have issues. Here’s how to troubleshoot:
✅ If emails soft bounce (temporary issue), try resending later.
✅ If emails hard bounce (permanent issue), remove those addresses.
✅ If engagement is low, send re-engagement campaigns before removing contacts.
✅ If your ESP’s links are flagged, check if they’re blacklisted.

Bonus Tip: If someone isn’t opening your emails but is still valuable to your business, try reaching them through Facebook ads instead.

Getting into the inbox isn’t just about writing great emails—it’s about sending them the right way. A clean list, the right tools, and smart troubleshooting can make all the difference.
